CONCEPT ART – ENVIRONMENT DESIGN
We’ve all seen or played amazing post-apocalyptic worlds in modern games and TV shows, so getting into that field was an exciting challenge.
Our main job here was to create key arts for the opening game cinematic.
All the scenes were taking place in the same overgrown but organized survivor camp before an unexpected attack…
As the project had already started to be built within Unreal, the best approach for us was to join the team within the same ecosystem. A perfect way to discuss camera, lighting, and layout within the same real time workflow. Provided references with a strong and moody atmosphere helped us build this wild and dangerous world.
Survivors were organized into small communities living into containers. That first scene was supposed to tell a lot about their main living space under a very warm and peaceful sunset. The quiet before the storm situation. We always started to block the first cameras in Unreal as our goal was to create a coherent environment moving forward. A high level of details was required to give as much clue about the world as possible.
The second key environment was a mysterious military protected warehouse. Despite the destructed world around, it was important to feel that something was hidden in this place. Many options were explored to find the right cinematographic balance between all the elements.
At night, kids are nicely playing inside. A very interesting image to create as we were supposed to add some obvious artificial elements to emphasis the feeling of a warm and cheerful place despite the poor living conditions. The discrete but nasty bed at the bottom right corner covered with colourful toy is saying a lot.
Post attack, the military camp has been blasted as well as the warehouse main entrance. Many iterations were required to assess the amount of damaged on the warehouse. A very pleasant image to build between flame and smoke.
While the project was moving forward, we were lucky enough to get involved on the environment as well. We focused on a portion of the landscape and worked on assets, layout, dressing, shading, and lighting.
