Junior / MID
MATTE PAINTER

As a Matte Painter, you will play a vital role in creating stunning photo-realistic digital environments and working closely with the environment/matte painting supervisor. Your attention to details alongside experience combining 2D photobashing skills with 2.5D projection setup in Nuke will be instrumental in crafting complex imagery and immersive shots.

This role demands a balance of technical abilities and artistic creativity to deliver high-quality visuals. Previous production experience is an advantage, but we are equally interested in graduates who demonstrate excellent teamwork, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create photorealistic 2D, 2.5D, and 3D environments, landscapes, and set extensions.
  • Blend digital painting, photography, and 3D elements seamlessly with live-action footage.
  •  Set up standard 2.5D projection pipelines using Maya geometry and Nuke projection cameras.
  • Interpret and apply creative direction from Leads and VFX Supervisors efficiently.
  • Assist with modeling, texturing, and lighting individual 3D elements where possible.
  • Gather and organize references and help prep elements for the team.

    Location: This is an in-office role based at our Wellington studio in New Zealand. To be considered, you must hold valid New Zealand working rights (PVT / Working Holiday Visa are welcome).

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Core software: Photoshop, Nuke & Maya and/or Blender. 
  • Portfolio/Showreel: A strong portfolio or showreel demonstrating artistic and technical skills in the creation of photorealistic landscapes.
  • Artistic Fundamentals: Comprehensive understanding of shape, light, color, composition, and perspective.
  • Compositing: Experience working with CG renders and using the 3D space for mapping techniques in nuke.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure high-quality results.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.

DESIRABLE SKILLS 

  • Concept art, sketching, and visual development skills.  Traditional Art.
  • Experience with basic 3D workflow including Substance 3D Painter, Houdini, Gaea, and SpeedTree.

JUNIOR / MID CG GENERALIST

As a CG Generalist, you will collaborate closely with Environment Sups, Art Directors and DMP artists to translate visual direction into 3D assets & 3D environments.

This role requires a blend of technical expertise and artistic judgment to create high-quality digital assets and environments. From layout, camera animation to asset creation (including modeling & shading) to lighting and rendering.

Working closely with the Compositing and Matte Painting teams to collaborate on shots together.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create hard-surface and organic models, including buildings, terrain, props, trees and background assets.
  • Process and clean up 3D scan data, optimize textures, and manage polygon budgets to ensure efficient scene performance.
  • Interpret artistic direction effectively and work from provided references to produce assets that align with the creative vision.
  • Collaborate with Supervisors, Art Directors, and team members to create high-quality assets and environments, meeting the technical requirements of the project.
  • Contribute to animation tasks ( camera, crowds, small environmental FX ) as needed, while understanding that this role is not specialized in animation.
  • Work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating strong initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Identify and report technical challenges or roadblocks to Supervisors promptly, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently to avoid delays in production.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

    • Core software:  Maya, Blender and/or Houdini, Substance Painter, Gaea, SpeedTree, Zbrush.
    • Portfolio/Showreel: Strong technical skills demonstrated through a  showreel with breakdown showcasing different CG workflows. Examples of modeling, procedural modeling, shading, lighting & rendering with a focus on large scale environments.
    • Attention to Detail: ability to showcase execution from concept art to final asset.
    • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow guidelines.

DESIRABLE SKILLS 

    • Experience with Nuke especially the 3D space and 3D mapping tools.
    • Experience with Unreal Engine

Junior / Mid Compositing Artist

We’re looking for Compositing Artists comfortable integrating CG and live-action elements to a high standard.

The ideal candidate will have a strong eye for colour, lighting, realism, and continuity, and be able to work collaboratively with lighting, FX, and environment artists/matte painters. Good knowledge of Nuke 3D space and ability to do some paint and roto is a must.

Previous production experience is an advantage, but we are equally interested in graduates who demonstrate excellent teamwork, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Combine live-action plates, 2D elements, and basic 3D passes to create believable shots.
  • Perform blue and green screen extraction, color correction, and edge treatment.
  • Perform 2D point tracking, planar tracking, and basic 3D camera tracks to lock elements down.
  • Setup 3D projection and collaborate with DMP artists to build shots together.
  • Match color, grain, lighting, and atmospheric effects between different visual elements.
  • Work closely with and follow the guidance of Leads and sups, contributing to the team’s collective artistic goals.
  • Respond positively to feedback, incorporating personal and creative input to refine and enhance designs while following naming convention and provided templates.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Core Software: Nuke & Maya and/or Blender.
  • Portfolio: A strong portfolio showcasing full CG shots and plate integration. Show casing an eye for shot composition.
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
  • Ability to support the DMP team or the 3D team extending technical knowledge either way with experience working with Photoshop, Blender, Houdini.
  • Basic Python scripting and knowledge of Mocha Pro, PFTrack or 3DEqualizer.

SENIOR MATTE PAINTER/ ENVIRONMENT Artist

As a Senior Matte Painter / Environment Artist, you will play a vital role in creating stunning digital environments, ranging from photo-realistic to stylized designs. Your expertise in 2.5D/2D & 3D workflows combined with a keen photographic eye, will be instrumental in crafting complex imagery.

This role demands a balance of technical proficiency, keeping up to date with new technology and artistic creativity to deliver and help other deliver high-quality visuals alongside great communication skills to support VFX sups and prod teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and create high-quality digital environments, ranging from photorealistic landscapes to stylized worlds that align with the artistic vision of the project.
  • Use 2.5D, 2D and 3D techniques to develop detailed photographic images and integrate them seamlessly into existing plates.
  • Collaborate closely with directors, leads, and other team members to ensure environments align with project requirements.
  • Maintain consistency in style and quality across all environment work while adhering to project deadlines.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize shot work ensuring smooth and efficient workflows.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging tools to bring innovative approaches to environment creation.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Matte Painter in VFX studios.
  • Portfolio/Showreel: A strong portfolio or showreel demonstrating exceptional artistic and technical skills.
  • Artistic Fundamentals: Comprehensive understanding of shape, light, color, composition, and perspective.
  • 3D Skills: Broad knowledge of 3D modeling, texturing/shading, lighting, and rendering workflows.
  • Compositing Expertise: Proficiency in compositing and camera mapping techniques. Ability to push shots to Creative Approval in Nuke.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure high-quality results.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Time Management: Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and consistently meet deadlines.

Junior Concept Artist

As a Junior Concept Artist, you will contribute to the conceptualization of characters, props, and environments that align with the project’s visual style. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your 2D and 3D skills while supporting the team’s creative process. You will work closely with Senior Artists and Leads, gaining valuable mentorship and experience across a variety of projects. With a focus on learning and growth, you’ll play an integral part in bringing imaginative worlds to life.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop semi-photorealistic and stylized concept designs based on written or verbal briefs, ensuring alignment with the project’s creative vision.
  • Prepare detailed specification sheets, including dimensions and design details.
  • Deliver work on schedule, proactively communicating challenges or delays with Leads and Supervisors to ensure project timelines are met.
  • Respond positively to feedback, incorporating personal and creative input to refine and enhance designs.
  • Maintain well-organized working files to ensure efficiency and accessibility for team members.
  • Embrace design challenges, iterations, and problem-solving with a proactive and creative approach.
  • Work closely with and follow the guidance of Leads and the Art Director, contributing to the team’s collective artistic goals.
  • Take opportunities to improve your skills and expand your knowledge of design tools, techniques, and industry trends.

  • Software Experience: Proficiency in Photoshop, with a demonstrated ability to create high-quality digital artwork.

DESIRABLE SKILLS
